How Pets Can Prevent Substance Abuse

A common reason parents get a household pet (or even better, a pet that ‘belongs’ solely to a child) is to teach responsibility. CBD and Pets

Provided by: Amanda Lasater
Cats can be sensitive creatures – feeling stressed and anxious may be part of their natural nature, or something that they try to hide the signs of as a defensive impulse harking back to their wild beginnings. As pet owners keeping kitty happy includes calming their frayed nerves and anxious feelings. A number of different natural remedies are available that work well on calming feline feelings. More recently, pet owners are looking to CBD for soothing anxiety in pets. Below we take a look at the pros and cons of this relatively new treatment.

Spotting stress in your cat
Symptoms of anxiety and stress in our pets have both physical and behavioral manifestations. Observation of your pet’s behavior is key as spotting the signs of stress in your pet is the first step to treating their condition. Noticeable changes to their routine, toileting outside of their litter tray (if already house trained), excessive scratching, meowing or grooming can all be signs that something is not quite right with your cat. Physical symptoms can range from looking lethargic and sleeping more than usual to bald patches or sores from over grooming. If any of these physical or behavioral changes show in your cat, it is wise to consult with your veterinarian.

Using CBD to treat anxiety
CBD is a relatively new treatment for anxiety in both animals and humans and as such there is not a huge amount of data available about its effects or how it works. However, the signs are promising with human studies showing CBD oil can benefit sleep, alleviate feelings of stress, anxiety and boost overall wellbeing. Anecdotal evidence of CBD use for pet’s anxiety has also been positive.

While marijuana can be toxic for cats, the CBD component of the plant is not and has particular benefits for treating inflammation, anxiety and pain. CBD or cannabidiol, is one of the 131 non-psychoactive components found in marijuana. THC, the sister compound of the same plant, is the psychoactive constituent that produces the ‘high’ and euphoric sensations marijuana is known for. This element of the plant has been known to also increase heart rate, cause problems with coordination and affect reaction times. While THC is likely to be the compound responsible for causing toxicity in cats, it is not fatal.

How CBD works in cats
All mammals have an endocannabinoid system that is responsible for helping maintain equilibrium for the immune system and other bodily functions. CBD interacts with this system, the molecules fitting well with the endocannabinoid receptors, by triggering various functions that prompt our body to maintain or produce a more balanced state.

CBD has been shown to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety in both pets and humans partly by temporarily boosting the amount of serotonin in the brain. Combined with the promotion of balance for our biological processes, CBD has both mental and physical health benefits for most mammals – cats included.

Given that the use of CBD for treating anxiety in pets is relatively new, it is wise to discuss this with your veterinarian if you are considering it as a way to improve your cat’s general well-being. However, be aware that in some states veterinarians may not be at legal liberty to discuss the use of CBD oil for your cat’s anxiety.
